Funded PhD Student Position in Organization Theory, Institute of Management, Faculty of Economics, University of Lugano (Switzerland)

The University of Lugano invites applications to the Organization and Management Theory stream of the PhD program in Economics. Students with an interest in organizational theory are particularly encouraged to apply. With its emphasis on rigorous training and creative high quality research the Faculty of Economics of the University of Lugano provides a solid first step toward the development of a successful international academic career.

The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation through the research project "On organizational forms: audience expectations, illegitimacy discounts and organizational mortality". Since the data of this project will be collected from German companies a very good knowledge of German is mandatory. Successful applicants will work as teaching and research assistants within the Institute of Management. Admission to the Ph.D. program is highly competitive. Admission decisions are based on the candidates' background, interests and potential for academic achievement. To satisfy the minimum criteria for consideration, applicants must have completed a Master degree in management, economics, sociology, psychology, or closely related fields prior to joining the program. A keen interest and a previous knowledge of quantitative empirical research is essential. The official language of
the Ph.D. program is English.

Successful candidates will join the Center for Organizational research (CORe), the new project-based research center created within the Faculty of Economics. The research interests represented within the CORe include, but are not limited to, demographic models of organizations in industry, processes of inter-firm mobility, decision-theoretic and ecological models of market entry and exit, system dynamics models of organizational and business processes, the analysis of social networks within and between organizations, simulation models for the study of industrial and corporate change, theories of organizational emergence, growth and innovation, and behavioral models of queuing
processes.

The applications received before the 15th of July 2009 will receive priority.

For further information, including detailed application instructions, candidates may contact directly Professor Nikolaus Beck (nikolaus.beck@lu.unisi.ch) or Filippo Carlo Wezel (filippo.carlo.wezel@lu.unisi.ch).

2 Ph.D. positions and 2 PostDoc positions at Human Technology Centre "HumTec", Aachen University.

Our Profile:
HumTec is an interdisciplinary Project House at RWTH Aachen University, funded by the Excellence Initiative of German federal and state governments. HumTec aims at fostering high level interdisciplinary research between the humanities/social sciences and the engineering/natural sciences. HumTec invites applications for several doctoral and post-doctoral positions anchored in the newly established, interdisciplinary research program Natural Media & Engineering: Emotion-Cognition Interactions and their Modification. The program, directed by Prof. Irene Mittelberg, explores the various functions natural media serve in human face-to-face interaction and in human-computer interaction. Of central interest is the semiotics of coverbal gestures and facial expressions. The aim is to examine the semiotic foundations of multimodally communicated cognitiveemotional processes, as they manifest themselves under naturalistic, clinically impaired, and technologically modified conditions. A systematic understanding of natural media is also expected to define important boundary conditions for the design of future interactive technologies. Combining methods from semiotics, linguistics, cognitive psychology, clinical neuroscience, and computer science, investigations will be carried out in three interrelated groups.

Your Profile:
The focus of each research group and the distribution of the advertised positions across these groups will be as follows.
1) Mediality in Multimodal Communication aims at developing a comprehensive, cognitive-semiotic framework for a theory of natural media of human communication. Theory-building will be rooted in empirical studies, integrating experimental design and naturalistic usage data. 2 Ph.D. positions: Successful candidates will have an outstanding degree and academic record, demonstrating a strong theoretical background in semiotics, linguistics, cognitive psychology, and/or psycholinguistics as well as in experimental and/or empirical methods. Experience with coding and analyzing multimodal data including co-speech gesture and/or facial expressions is a plus.
2) Natural Media and Clinical Neuroscience will examine the neural substrate underlying cognitive-emotional processes during verbal and non-verbal communication in both normal and dysfunctional communicative patterns, e.g., in aphasia, schizophrenia, and autism.
1 PostDoc position: Successful candidates will have an outstanding doctoral degree in clinical neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, psycholinguistics, and/or medicine with a focus on brain correlates of language and communication. They have a strong background in experimental and/or empirical methods including statistics, models of normal and impaired language processing (including sign language) and expertise in modern brain imaging and stimulation techniques. Experience with project management and conducting studies with neurological or psychiatric patients is a definite plus.
3) Natural Media and Serious Gaming will investigate the role of natural media in the design and use of cooperative computer games in a "serious gaming" context.
1 PostDoc position: Successful candidates have accomplished a doctorate in computer science or a closely related field. They have a strong background in pervasive game technology and implementation, and/or in design and evaluation methods for "serious games" in domains such as engineering, business, or medicine. Interest and experience in interdisciplinary cooperation is a definite plus.

Your duties and responsibilities:
HumTec welcomes creative and team-minded young scholars with a genuine interest in cross-disciplinary research and collaboration. The successful candidates will work closely with internationally renowned experts in their fields and have access to state-of-the-art technologies including neuroimaging (PET-Scanner and 3T-MRI at the Dept. of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy), housed at the university hospital (www.ukaachen.de). Excellent English language skills are required; previous knowledge of German is not required, but the willingness to learn German is desirable. Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) is a UNESCO heritage site located one hour West of Cologne, right on the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands.
Your application should include a CV, a cover letter, and a 3-page statement of research interests. Please also provide the names and email addresses of three referees.

Our offer:
The candidate will be employed as a regular employee. The position is to be filled as soon as possible and is for a fixed term available for 2 years. This is a full-time vacancy. The PostDoc positions are full-time positions. The Ph.D. positions are part-time positions. The option of undertaking a PhD is provided. The pay scale classification complies with the labour agreement TV-L.
RWTH Aachen University has been rewarded with the "Total-E-Quality-Award" for its efforts with respect to gender equality. Applications from female candidates are explicitly welcome. In cases of equal qualification, aptitude and expertise of the applicants, female applicants will be given preferential treatment for those salary groups and careers in which females are underrepresented, unless there are preponderant reasons to give preference to another applicant. Please refer to § 8 Article 6 of the North Rhine-Westphalian Equal Opportunities Act (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz NW). RWTH Aachen University has been rewarded with the title "disability-friendly" ("Prädikat behindertenfreundlich") for its efforts with respect to training and employment of severely disabled people. Applications from severely disabled people with appropriate suitability are explicitly welcome. This also applies to people with equal opportunities in accordance with § 2 SGB IX (Social Code).
